The Final Preparations

3 Years on from BikeSplashBike 2014

Our Ensuing European adventure has crept up on us like a stealthy tiger… Even now, when we have less than three weeks to the start it is still just lurking in the long grass as we each busy ourselves trying  to ensure our absence will not be much noticed while we are away.

It seems hard to believe that the image below was taken almost exactly three years ago, just before we embarked on our BikeSplashBike adventure…

Back then we had very little idea what to expect – or what cycling up hill really meant! Having survived Land’s End to John O’Groats we all have a tiny bit more experience, but knowing what cycling through mountains can be like makes a challenge like this all the more ‘challenging’.

Cycling the length of Italy last year (with Strive 2016) was relentlessly tough and as we contemplate the route ahead I do have unpleasant flashbacks of 14hours days with never ending climbs…  But when I begin to feel afraid I try to remind myself that fear is sometimes unavoidable, but the key is to not let it paralyse you. As Sir Edmund Hillary famously said…

“I have discovered that even the mediocre can have adventures and even the fearful can achieve…”

This time there will certainly be more mountains… but hopefully the highs will be be worth the lows 😉 It has certainly been my experience that…

The best view comes after the hardest climb

Just thinking about the scenery we are hoping to see and all the people who have supported us in the past is making me more excited by the second…

Having benefited so much from the blogs of others on their adventures – we will try to update this site regularly with stories and information from our trip and will certainly share any secrets we discover to making our bikes lighter, our bodies more energised and our days more magical!
